If Ubuntu is installed in VM then there might be graphical issues. This issues might also be present if VM is using Nvidia virtual or physical graphics card for graphics purposes. One of the possible ways to solve the issue is:

  1. Fully update the system
  2. Remove open-vm-tools
  3. Install open-vm-tools-desktop

In case of nvidia proprietary drivers, also blacklist nouveau.
