Intune Device Ownership Status: Corporate vs Personal

Description

In Microsoft Intune, devices are classified as either **Corporate** or **Personal** based on ownership. This classification helps IT administrators apply appropriate policies depending on whether the device is owned by the organization or the user.

Ownership Types

  • Corporate Devices:
    • Devices owned and managed by the organization.
    • Typically Azure AD joined or enrolled via corporate provisioning.
    • Allows IT to apply stricter security policies, software installations, and controls.
  • Personal Devices:
    • Devices owned by users (Bring Your Own Device - BYOD).
    • Enrolled individually by users for access to company resources.
    • May have lighter restrictions to respect user privacy.

Purpose

Differentiating device ownership helps balance security and privacy:

  • Corporate devices can be fully managed and controlled.
  • Personal devices get limited management focused on protecting company data.

How to Identify Ownership Status

  • In the Intune portal, under Devices, check the Ownership column.
  • On Windows devices, users can see device management status under Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.

Real-world Example

An organization issues laptops as corporate devices to employees; these devices show "Corporate" status and receive full management policies. Employees also use their personal smartphones to access email; those devices are "Personal" and have restricted management to protect privacy.

Notes

  • Ownership status affects compliance policies and conditional access.
  • Changing ownership requires device re-enrollment.
  • Intune automatically detects ownership based on enrollment method.
