testdisk can be useful in recovering deleted partitions. For that just run testdisk and choose disk and partition table type. Other options for recovering should be self-explanatory.
Apart from recovering deleted partitions testdisk is also useful in recovering files. For that use testdisk to create image of partition from where files need to be recovered. This is useful also for recovering files using photorec, etc. other recovery tools.
Once image is created use 'photorec image.dd' to analyze the image and choose options for restoring all restorable files to desired location. Note that photorec comes with testdisk package.
