If you receive email with winmail.dat attachment while checking email in Linux or even IMAP over HTTP (Web) based email access then you can use following steps to read forwarded email:

  1. Install tnef package
  2. Run tnef on downloaded winmail.dat file using terminal
  3. Rename extracted file to have .eml extension
  4. Double click on extracted file with .eml extension to open it with thunderbird.

You can also search for tnef in Thunderbird addons search page and try to install 'Lookout' plugin to help to some extent
