Connecting to IMAP servers (Gmail, Office365) using kmail email client
Personal experiences have led to believe that thunderbird and evolution on Cent-OS 6.4 (Final) do not connect to Gmail or Office365 over IMAP protocol properly. Same is easely achieved using kmail. For kmail use following settings
- Gmail
-
- IMAP
- imap.gmail.com, SSL, 993
- SMTP
- smtp.gmail.com, STARTTLS, 587
- Username
- Full email address including @gmail.com
- Office365
-
- IMAP
- outlook.office365.com, SSL, 993
- SMTP
- smtp.office365.com, SSL, 587
- Username
- Full corporate email address including @domain
Normal IMAP servers such as ones created using dovecot, cyrus or Zimbra which work with thunderbird and evolution also work with kmail. So kmail becomes a single client for connecting to all types of IMAP email accounts.
Use Disconnected IMAP and not IMAP for creating account. The older versions of KMail provide two options while creating account IMAP and 'Disconnected IMAP'. Choose 'Disconnected IMAP'. In newer version within IMAP account settings there is a checkbox 'Enable disconnected mode' which converts an IMAP account to Disconnected IMAP account. Disconnected IMAP will cache all emails locally for very fast access.
