Change Ethernet MTU in Windows 7 or Windows 8

To Change (Reduce or Increase) Ethernet MTU in Windows 7 or Windows 8 use following steps:

  1. Run a 'cmd' as administrator
  2. Look at interface name for which MTU needs changing from "Network Connections" or use command "netsh interface ipv4 show subinterface"
  3. Use following command to change interface MTU:
netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface “Local Area Connection” mtu=1458 store=persistent
Here replace "Local Area Connection" with appropriate interface name learned in previous steps
  4. Restart the computer and test again. The "netsh interface ipv4 show subinteface" command should also list existing MTU for each interface.
