By default the Windows Server 2019 VMs might allow RDSH via VDI RDSH pools to work only till 180 days. For any extended usage perhaps license is required. To setup a RDSH licensing server and client use below steps:


Get Microsoft licensing ID for the organization

The next sections explain server setup using "Agreement No". To find Agreement No for your organization please use:

  1. Open URL :https://www.microsoft.com/Licensing/Servicecenter/default.aspx
  2. Login into Microsoft volume licensing Service center with User account and Password .
  3. Once login u Will find the dash board of Microsoft volume licensing Service center.
  4. Click on License Tab Licenses Summary and select "View Relationship Summary"
  5. Under this u will find the Licencing ID of your Organization..


Licensing server setup

To setup central license server for various RDSH VMs using Agreement No use:

  1. Go to server manager -> Local server
  2. manage -> Add roles and features
  3. Select Add roles and feature (Not remote desktop services)
  4. Select Remote desktop services role
  5. Click next on features
  6. Then "Select remote desktop licensing" server
  7. Go through installation

Further, open Remote desktop licensing manager

  1. Right click on Select server and select activate server
  2. Activate Wizard will open click on next
  3. Connection method Automatic connection and click next
    This requires direct access to Internet. If that is not available then open IE / Edge as administrator and do required proxy configuration and proxy login. Open any test page such as http://www.google.co.in/ and leave the browser running.
  4. Fill Company Informatation such as First name, Last name, Company etc. appropriately.
  5. Click Next after filling the above details ..
  6. Click Next No need to fill any data and click Next
  7. Change the option License Program to Enterprise agreement and click next
  8. Put the agreement number as noted in previous section on Microsoft site and click Next.
  9. Select the product version to windows server 2019
  10. License type: RDS per User CAL (If you have device Cals then select that option instead of user Cal)
  11. Enter appropriate quanity and click Next
  12. Complete the activation wizard .

Configure client to connect to server

  1. Open gpedit.msc
  2. Go to Expand Administrative templates -> Remote desktop services -> "Remote desktop session host" -> "licensing"
  3. In "Use specified remote desktop license servers", change to enabled and give license server FQDN setup above.
  4. In "Set the remote desktop licensing mode" -> Set to enabled with per user cal settings.
  5. The usage count on licensing server gets reflected properly only after reboot of RDSH license client VM.
