In Cisco switches port status can change to err-disabled for various reasons. To determine exact cause one can use:

  1. In global configuration mode use 'errdisable recovery cause all' to enable automated recovery
  2. Then in privileged exec mode use 'show errordisable recovery' to see various types of error possible and also in recovery section the reason why specific port has been disabled.

Note that once configured switch will automatically recover from various errors in 300 seconds. Hence if this is not desired one should use 'no errdisable recovery cause all' once the cause of error has been determined.
