In Ubuntu 14.04 it was observed that print requests get held automatically even when settings indicate "No held". This does not gets solved by editing '/etc/cups/printer.conf' or similar files. To solve problem for current boot one of the below two methods can be used:

  1. Delete printer from printers settings page. Reconnect printer USB cable and printer should get added automatically. Further prints should work properly.
  2. Restart printer and choose release. Further prints should work properly.

A good permanent solution for this problem was not found.
