Getting information about ESXi or vCenter environment

We can get detailed information about ESXi or vCenter environment including information on health issues such as:

  • Connected CD/DVD drive
  • CPU/Memory configuration issues
  • Zombie disks

by using RV tools. We only need to give ESXi host / vCenter information (IP, Username, Password) and then within a minute we can see all the details in the tool.

The tool also allows exporting this into excel file format for modifying / editing the information with remarks, comments, etc.

Duplicate VMX issue

While using RV Tools we observed that if for some reason a particular VM folder has two .vmx files (One correct and other incorrect) then RV Tools might give wrong information about configuration / zombie disks etc. related to that VM based on wrong information in the incorrect VMX file. Hence while using RV Tools we need to be careful about:

  • There should ideally be only one correct vmx in each VM folder
  • Dont directly delete disks reported as zombie. Ideally rename the disks and observe for a period (week or more) before deleting zombie disks
