Unlike traditional datastores where Storage server is not virtualization aware and cannot be configured at VM disk level, similar to VSAN using Vvol (VMWare Virtual Volumes) it is possible to integrate storage server with VMWare stack such that storage is also aware of Virtual Disks created for VMs.
