Storage VM (SVM) Creation on NetApp ONTAP Storage
Steps to Create a New SVM
1. Login to the NetApp ONTAP storage WebUI using the admin user credentials.
2. Navigate to Storage > Storage VMs.
3. Click on +Add to create a new SVM (if not already existing).
4. Provide a name for the SVM and select the required Access Protocols as needed:
For Object Storage (S3)
- Check Enable S3 under Access Protocol.
- Provide the Object Server FQDN.
- Select Enable TLS and specify the port.
- If you have a CA-signed certificate:
- Uncheck Use system-generated certificate.
- Select Use external-CA signed certificate.

For NFS
- Check Enable NFS to enable the NFS protocol.
- Click on Allow NFS client access.
- Click on +Add to create a new client rule.
- In the New rule menu, provide the client specification (IP address or hostname).
- From the Access Protocols checkbox, select the required access types:
- Read-only access
- Read/Write access
- Superuser access (for Unix type)

- Click Save.
For iSCSI
- Enable iSCSI by checking Enable iSCSI.
- In the Network Interface section, select the desired network for both controllers.
- Click Save to create the SVM.
- Once created, a notification will confirm: The storage VM was created successfully.
How to Resize an SVM Volume
- Navigate to Volumes.
- Click the three dots (…) on the specific SVM root volume and select Resize.
- In the Resize Volume menu, enter the required size under Capacity.
- Adjust the Snapshot Reserve % if needed (or leave the default).
- Click Save.
How to Add a New Volume to an Existing SVM with NFS Export Policy
- Login to NetApp WebUI with admin credentials.
- Navigate to Storage > Volumes and click +Add.
- In the Add Volume menu:
- Provide a name for the volume.
- Enter the required size.
- Select the target Storage SVM from the dropdown.
- Check Export via NFS.
- Click on More options.

- In the More Options window:
- Scroll to Access Permission.
- Under Grant Access to Host, select Create new export policy.
- Provide the IP addresses of the client servers.

- After adding client IPs, scroll down and click Save to create the new volume with export policies.
- The volume will now appear under the existing SVM.
- To allow clients to access it, read-only access must be provided to the root volume of the SVM.
- Navigate to Storage > Volumes, locate the root volume, and select Edit.
- In the Export Policy section, either:
- Add the newly created policy rules under the root export policy, or
- Add 0.0.0.0/0 with read-only access.

- Save the changes.
