  1. Install Windows Server 2012 R2 on a VM or physical server.
In case of a cloned VM, it might make sense to go to Windows -> Run and execute 'sysprep'. System cleanup action - OOBE, generalize (MUST) and shutdown options - Reboot. Set timezone and keyboard. Set administrator password.
  2. Login as administrator
  3. Ensure that system has desired static IP address. DNS should be AD server that the host intends to join.
  4. Change computer name. Give desired name and change from workgroup to domain (eg rnd.com)
  5. Give domain administrator username and password, and click ok.
  6. You should receive welcome to domain message.
  7. Reboot the machine
  8. Optionally go to AD server - Active Directory Domain and Computers and verify that computer is listed under Computers
