Microsoft announced free upgrade for Windows 7 or Windows 8 to Windows 10 for a limited period of time. However, the offer was not removed and can still be used. To upgrade any Windows 7 or 8 PC to Windows 10 seamlessly use following steps:
- Ensure that current system is licensed and activated properly. ( Windows -> System )
- Get copy of current Windows key via produkey ( http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html#DownloadLinks ) or Belarc advisor or any such similar tool
- Take backup of all keys shown by above tool. Note that key is stored either in registry (obtained above) or in BIOS automatically detected during activation or pasted under laptop (at bottom or under battery).
- Take full backup of data. As such upgrade is smooth and all software and files are preserved.
- Search for "Download media creation tool windows 10 64 bit" and download the tool.
- Run the tool and choose option "Upgrade this PC now"
- After upgrade login into your microsoft account (eg hotmail) to link the key with your account. This can later help in reinstalling Windows and reactivating it.
