- Install Windows Server 2012 R2 on a VM or physical server.
- In case of a cloned VM, it might make sense to go to Windows -> Run and execute 'sysprep'. System cleanup action - OOBE, generalize (MUST) and shutdown options - Reboot. Set timezone and keyboard. Set administrator password.
- Login as administrator
- Ensure that system has desired static IP address. DNS should be AD server that the host intends to join.
- Change computer name. Give desired name and change from workgroup to domain (eg rnd.com)
- Give domain administrator username and password, and click ok.
- You should receive welcome to domain message.
- Reboot the machine
- Optionally go to AD server - Active Directory Domain and Computers and verify that computer is listed under Computers
