vHMC can be deployed on top of VMWare (ESXi) or KVM hypervisors. To deploy it on vSphere use following steps:

  1. Choose option to deploy OVA/OVF file from vSphere web client
  2. Give appropriate VM name as per requirement and choose downloaded ova file from local disk to deploy vHMC
  3. Choose appropriate Datastore, Network, Thin/Thick disk, etc. to deploy the VM
  4. After ova is deployed, power it on (If it is not automatically powered on after deployment)
  5. Access the VHMC console and select "Exit and run this program again on the next console start" on "Display configuration selection" dialog box. Select Next.
  6. In the following screen accept license agreement and proceed further.
  7. On Guided Setup Splash Enable "Show this screen again when I sign on to HMC" and click Yes
  8. On "Laumch Guided Setup Wizard" screen select Next
  9. On "Date and Time" screen configure appropriate Date, Time and TimeZone and click Next
  10. For user 'hscroot' with role 'hmcsuperadmin' enter desired password. Click next.
  11. For user 'root' enter desired password and click next
  12. On additional user creation page perhaps create a user with hmcservicerep role with desired username and password and click next.
  13. On "Would you like to create another new HMC user?" screen, perhaps select No and click Next
  14. There will be a informational page informing that we need to do network settings. Click next
  15. HMC Virtual appliance might have four ports. Select the first virtual port (eth0) and click next
  16. Set media speed to autodetect (Virtual NIC) and click Next
  17. Set network as "Open network" and click Next
  18. Set a static IP address and netmask for network interface. Click next
  19. On the IPv6 network settings page, leave defaults and click next
  20. On Firewall prompt, select "No" instead of default "Yes, I'd like to configure HMC firewall settings for this adapter" option.
  21. When again presented with list of Ethernet adapters including eth0 (configured), Select No as we do not want to configure any additional adapters at this point. Click Next.
  22. Enter values for HMC hostname, domain name and description. Click next
  23. Configure gateway IP and leave gateway device as eth0. Click next
  24. Configure appropriate DNS based on environment and click next.
  25. On domain suffix page leave defaults and click next
  26. There will now be a page informing about call-home and notifications settings to be done. Click next
  27. Enter SMTP server and port. Also add a few email IDs. Click next
    Against each email ID select whether only "Call home" events should be notified or whether "All problem events" should be notified.
    Ideally add at least one email ID of each type
  28. Click Finish so that vHMC appliance can get configured as per given inputs.
  29. After setup there will be a prompt related to log off click ok.
  30. After log off, login into HMC as hscroot
  31. Go to Console Management -> "Shutdown or Restart management console" option
  32. Choose "Restart HMC" and click ok.
  33. After reboot again login and from "Users and Security" -> "Systems and Console Security" choose "Enable remote operation"
  34. After this we can login into HMC using admin station client web browser
  35. Go to Console Settings -> Change network settings. Go to "Firewall settings" tab. Allow incoming SSH connections to this HMC.
